Parks, Monkeys and People in Miami

Whatever you’re looking for in a great vacation you are most certainly going to find it in Miami. In addition to being one of the country’s top tourist destinations, it is also a major retirement destination for US residents as well as those from other countries. There are a great number of prestigious and professional cultural establishments and entertainment options in the city and these are extremely popular with and appreciated by tourists as well as the city’s residents. However, one of the most universally appealing aspects of the city for both the guests in the hotels in Miami as well as the residents of the city is the great beaches and city parks that are found there.

The amount of parks and recreational facilities in Miami is staggering, even when taken into consideration outside of including the beaches and water front centers. In addition, there are various theme and features in the parks that sometimes include zoological components and other great attraction orientations. Of course there are standard quiet and peaceful park areas where the main focus is beauty, nature and relaxation. These are some of the most popular for residents, though almost everyone enjoys a quiet afternoon picnic in a beautiful outdoor landscape.

The Monkey Jungle is one of the great features of the city as well as one of the most intriguing places to visit for tourists. This park actually reverses the typical animal oriented attractions and allows for the monkeys to run free while the human visitors remain caged. This is an interesting dynamic that serves not only to preserve the intention of the park to provide great living accommodations for its inhabitants but also presents a perspective reversal for the human guests. Of course it also keeps all species safe and secure and allows everyone to experience the dynamics of each other. The preservation began in 1933 and has continued and grown throughout the decades and remains a one of a kind park. There are thirty species of primates represented at the park and the humans have the great privilege of watching them at their most natural orientation.

Elings Park is one of the busiest of Santa Barbara’s parks. It is popular for friends, couples and families and enjoys a diverse population of visitors and an assortment of events and activities. A Vancouver Island Kind of Story

When I made the choice to move to vancouver island , it was a decision I based on two people who had influence my life. The first person, was my father. He was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. I had been there once, or so I was told as I was too young to remember it. But the way that he spoke about the Pacific Northwest…in the middle of a summer in Phoenix, just made me wish that I was there.

There are many beautiful cities in Canada to consider moving to toronto , Montreal, Ottawa…but I wanted Vancouver. The second person, who played a role, in seconding my opinion, was an artist who owned a house on the island. I had seen her photographs of ship yards, of the long white masts pointing to the blue and grays of the sky, all the while back-dropped by the mountains and water…both of which were equally blue and gray. I listened to her stories of nights spent having a bit of wine and talking with the locals. I thought about this and knew that I was kind of over, for the time being, the reds and oranges and the white hot heat of the Arizona desert. I needed something completely different.

I needed a new apartment , I needed new air to breath, and I needed new things to see. See, I’m a painter too, and what we see every day, for some reason, affects how we feel every day. Like picasso in his blue period , I was needing some blue. And I wanted to be in a town, where the locals actually talked with one another. A place where sending a text about having coffee, seemed a ridiculous alternative to just having coffee. It is a very good thing, to take oneself out of the day to day, familiar environment from time to time. To see not only what you discover, but what in turn…just happens to discover you.

Natural Cape May

Cape May holds a special place in many different hearts, and when you come here to visit, it will enter your heart, too.  There is so many wonderful things about Cape May that it’s sometimes dizzying to think how so much beauty can exist in one place.  There are plenty of things that would recommend a Cape May hotel and not all of them are based simply on the place.  There is a hospitality that comes naturally to a place like this.  Life close to water simply does something wonderful to a person, where the rhythms of nature start to take over everything.

It’s no surprise, then, that Cape May has so many local authors writing nature guides to the Cape.  After just a few moments here, you’ll see how the presence of nature is splendidly overwhelming.  It certainly helps to have so much shoreline to daydream on, and the constant sound of the surf reminding us of what’s really important.  The rhythms of the sea are our own rhythms, after all, and the mysteries of the ocean are always right here.  A look at the watercolor work of Patricia Rainey can help to give just a sample of the natural views that await you.

Paul Kerlinger is another local who’s been enraptured by the wonders of nature here, and he’s been keeping a watchful eye on the incredible birds that can be seen here.  They change with the months, although some of them are always nearby.  Seabirds, egrets, and owls are just a few of the critters that you might catch a glimpse of while you’re visiting.  There’s so much more in store, and every visit will provide new glimpses into the wonders of the world, making this a very enviable spot to spend some time getting in touch with nature.

The Innovative Technology of the Charcoal and Gas Grills

The outdoor cooking industry has been reporting a consistent growth in the sales of their products, whether it be built in gas grills with all the extras, or simple old fashioned charcoal grills. In the United States it seems that most everyone loves a cook-out and people are doing this more and more often.  And now, most people who love grilling, have become two grill backyard chefs, doing some of the cooking on the gas grill and some of the cooking over charcoal.

There is no denying the convenience of a gas grill, just as there is no denying the flavor of meat and vegetables that have been cooked using charcoal.  The continued growth of these appliances has resulted in new and innovative grills.  Each year new models are introduced into the market, this is one industry that is not suffering from the effects of the economic situation in the country.  New features seem to be added daily, the hot new one for the gas grill has been the addition of infrared burners.  Take into consideration however, that with the older gas powered burners, the heating time is very short, and the newer models will take sometimes up to ten minutes to heat up.

When choosing a gas grill it is best to not go with the inexpensive models, unless they happen to be the highest quality gas grills on sale.  Poor quality grills break down frequently, and this may be one reason for the sudden surge in the charcoal and charcoal grill markets.  Stainless steel is being used more and more in the construction of grills, gas and charcoal.  Again though, be certain of the quality of the grill you are purchasing as some of these models can be a bit flimsy and light weight.   And…these stainless steel models tend to be a bit more expensive.  There are many options for consumers when comes to the purchase of outdoor grills.  Some people are choosing to build entire outdoor kitchens as they become more skilled at backyard barbecues. This is a great way to not only improve the quality of your cooking experience, but it will also create a wonderful atmosphere in your backyard.

Brockenhurst and Caravans

My husband and I just returned from Roundhill after taking a two and a half day break camping in the New Forest area. Before camping though, see my husband likes camping and I do not, we booked a room at one of the Brockenhurst Hotels so I could enjoy a nice luxurious bed and hot shower during our time off also. New Forest campsite is a beautiful spot, though, don’t get me wrong, it’s just he understands my needs for creature comforts and I understand his needs to be out in the wilderness.

The campsite is lovely and had plenty of space for pitching. New Forest is my husbands favorite spot to camp. I enjoyed being bugged by ponies, cows and donkeys who wander around freely. But, we did have to keep our food locked up and away from them. They all had a tendency to take a bite if we weren’t looking. There are signs posted all over saying not to feed them, but the animals don’t read well.

Luckily, I took a hot shower at the hotel, because my husband told me that the showers at the campsite were not hot. I just smiled at him all the while thinking to myself, yes dear, that’s why I like hotels! Oh, and then I did have to say that we are campers in a tent, this isn’t a five star hotel. He just laughed. We did find the staff here very friendly and helpful. There’s also an 11pm curfew which seemed like no one adhered to though. Lots of children still running around and making all kinds of noise playing. I didn’t mind too much, because I knew this was the last week of summer holidays and the site was full. Overall, though, I must admit, this campsite is quite beautiful, just don’t expect peace or tranquility because there’s too many children around.

The Origin and Practice of Hydrotherapy

The use of water to maintain, to restore ones health, and for revitalization is known as hydrotherapy.  Treatments include everything from saunas, to sitz baths, to steam rooms, and to the use of hat and cold compresses.  During the 19th Century a monk from Bavaria, Sebastian Kneipp, discovered the effects of using water to cure diseases and to eliminate toxins, or waste from ones body.  He is said to be the father of modern hydrotherapy.  Throughout Asia and Europe, going to the mineral and hot springs has always been a common practice.  And now in the United States, as more people are seeking the care of naturopathic doctors and holistic approaches to health, more people are discovering what these other cultures have known for years, and that is that water heals.  Some are going to spas or to the offices of physical therapists, while others are purchasing hot tubs from companies such as choosehottubsdirect.com, and practice self care in their own homes.

Physiological reactions to hot and cold are obvious, as hot tends to relax one and make them sleepy, and cold serves to invigorate and to wake up the body.  Heat dilates the vessels, while cold constricts them.  Alternating between the two serves to create a pumping affect, moving the blood through the body faster, thus decreasing swelling of injured areas while stimulating circulation and aiding in the elimination of toxins.  Dry heat, such as in a Turkish steam bath, involve the use of either hot or cold compresses which cover the body.  Many colds and cases of respiratory or sinus infections, bronchitis or skin infections are treated in this manner.  This has been shown to not only reduce the symptoms and provide relief, but to shorten the duration time of the illness as well.  Sitz baths are also used for various infections, and have been shown to decrease the severity and the occurrence of such discomforting ailments as hemorrhoids or Premenstrual syndrome.  In all, choosing to bring a hot tub or spa into ones home is making the conscious choice to take better care and control over ones health in the long run.

Relaxing Effects of Hot Tubs and Spas

The addition of hot tubs and spas to one’s backyard or home, is exciting and will lead to many nights and days of relaxation and rejuvenation.  In the quest for managing stress levels, one of the most essential elements is the reduction of tension in the mind and in the body.  This involves more than enjoying and practicing a hobby, more than just peace of mind, it is a process that serves to reduce the negative effects on one’s mind and on the body.  In this fast paced world of working all day, picking the kids up from school, sitting in traffic and worrying about finances, individuals can tend to forget about themselves, they can forget to, or have literally forgotten how to…just simply relax.

If one chooses to install their hot tubs and spas into their backyard, gardens can be designed surrounding beautiful gazebos, strung with lights and hung with delicate wind chimes.  Choosing the flowers that are suitable to individual tastes serves to create a visually inviting environment.  Other plants and trees can be planted for the aromatic benefits.  Aromatherapy, usually involves the use of essential oils, however in planting a garden with such varieties as the creosote bush, the desert sage plant, the Mexican anise tree, or the Arabian jasmine vines, one can enjoy the physical and psychological benefits right in one’s own backyard garden, while relaxing in the hot tub.

All of these combined, the visual and aromatic beauty, the soothing sounds, and the bubbling water, serve to lower the heart rate and blood pressure.  The warm water serves to relieve tense muscles or the pain associated with chronic injuries and ailments.  Blood flow is increased throughout the body and feeds the major muscles and organs.  And the anger and frustration that can be caused by a bad day at the office is simply washed away, giving one not only the confidence, but the energy to tackle whatever it is that tomorrow will bring.

Direct vs. indirect heat

Built in gas grills offer an incredible diversity of cooking settings that will change the way you think about food.  There is an elegance and precision to it that is really quite stunning.  Both the chef and the guests are in for a very enjoyable experience.  The social possibilities here are also quite endless, as this is not the typical solitary preparation, but a public event.  It’s a good idea to get a little deft as some of your techniques, but a lot of this is improvisation, and that’s where the fun is.

Still, there are some basics that are good to know before setting out to cook for a large party.  It won’t take long before you can either know what you’re doing and show it, or before you can fake it really well!  Some basics, though, can’t be faked, and one of these is knowing the difference between direct and indirect grilling.  Direct grilling, in a nutshell, simply refers to putting the meat directly on the heat.  This is where most conceptions of the “All-American Grill” come from.  One thinks of hot dogs and burgers sizzling on the grill in the middle of summer, with happy kids and the smell of sun tan lotion.  There are some grill purists who might shudder at the notion, but it’s where our inspirations live, or where they come from.  But direct grilling can refer to any kind of meat or vegetable cooked directly over the hot spot.  To be precise, have the flames set to different temperatures so you can control the amount of heat while cooking.

For indirect grilling, there are more considerations.  This is where smoking and barbecue-like techniques can come into play, and give more subtle flavors to the meats.  Indirect grilling is where the food is placed near the heat source, so the temperature can work through the meat, but not directly on it.  As you might guess, this technique is used for larger cuts of meat that need a longer cooking time.  With your built in gas grill, this technique is easy to execute (but practice, practice, practice…).  Heat the elements around the center, and place the meat here.  This way, the heat will penetrate it from all sides.  Also, use the cover, of course, to lock in both temperature and flavor.  A little bit of practice on these will buy you some lovely moments where you can show off your more successful experiments!
