Cool Jazz in Albany
New York’s state capital, Albany still holds on to its old city charm with its tulip festivals, nightlife, and especially its live jazz.
Albany, located in upstate New York along the Hudson River, only takes a scenic Amtrak train ride from New York City through some of the most beautiful landscapes and breathtaking Adirondacks to make it to this wonderful city. There are plenty of five star Albany hotels ready to accommodate their visitors.
On September 11, 2010, the annual Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival , held at the Albany Riverfront Park Amphitheater, begins at 12:30 and last till 8pm. The featured performers this year include the John Scofield Jazz Quartet, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Somi and Troika. Fireworks begin at 7:30pm. Enjoy a highly acclaimed musical event, great food and beverages, plus there will be plenty of activities for children.
If that isn’t enough, on the first Tuesday of each month, many local jazz musicians who perform at Justin’s get together to form the Keith Prays Big Soul Ensemble, forming a 17 piece jazz band at the Tess’ Lark Tavern , located at 453 Madison Ave. They play unconstrained John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis tunes as well as their own compositions in the Tavern’s back room. Albany can’t get any better than that.
