Grab Bars: a Safety Measure for Everyone

Considering having your parent move in with you in order to take care of them better? Then you need to be equipped for safety. If your parent is older than 65, chances are their mobility has started to wane. You need to begin taking into consideration how their needs for getting around can be made easier and as safe as possible, especially in the bathroom. To prevent falls, grab bars need to be installed in the shower, the bathtub and next to the commode.

Grab bars aren’t just for the infirmed or the elderly anymore. If you’re a young family, grab bars come in handy for the entire family; for your children, your teenagers and for you. Bathrooms are considered the most dangerous room in the house, mainly due to all the water flowing about. Water makes surfaces slippery and installing grab bars where water accumulates, is your best bet to keep your loved ones from serious injury. A grab bar next to the commode is a great aid for anyone in your family weakened from an illness and finds it hard to sit down or get back up. As you grow older, you’ll have a peace-of-mind knowing that you have something to grab on to.

Also keep in mind that if you plan to sell your home sometime in the future, grab bars will add to the value of your home and elegance to any bathroom depending on what you purchased.

We got a condo that had been previously owned by an elderly couple and had grab bars in the bathroom. We learned pretty quick that they are great for keeping your balance when you’re drunk — or when you’re hungover.
