Harry Connick Jr.s Contributions to New Orleans Music Restoration

New Orleans has always been known for being the home of great blues and jazz clubs. After the hurricane Katrina devastation, the long rebuilding and community healing efforts began and the preservation of the city’s great music tradition was fundamental to this. Even major performers such as Harry Connick Jr. contributed greatly to the city’s efforts. Connick Jr. was born in the area and New Orleans forms the base of his musical orientation. It is appropriate that he would want to contribute the reestablishment of the great musical culture of the city, as well as other aspects of its infrastructure.

Connick Jr. helped to organize the benefit concert that took place in 2005 also toured the city in an effort to promote awareness of the destruction and damage. He has also established a New Orleans based group called Krewe of Orpheus . This is a music based organization that parades through the city and travels up and down St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street on Lundi Gras of every year. This is the Monday before Fat Tuesday of Mardi Gras.

Connick Jr.’s rebuilding and revitalizing efforts didn’t end with the telethon. He also worked with Branford Marsalis and together created the music revitalizing effort that developed a music village. The initiative established musicians and other qualified participants the opportunity for affordable housing. This was a joint effort with Habitat for Humanity and the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music is the area’s centerpiece. He is greatly invested in his hometown and recognizes the importance of music to the community. That might be something of an understatement as music is inherent to the social consciousness of New Orleans, which contributes to its overall atmosphere. This is something that tourists notice immediately when visiting the jazz filled rooms of some of the older hotels in the city.
