Sea Town Sanctuary
Forte dei Marmi hotels grand our quaint and have some lovely hospitality. This sea port has become quite the vacation spot. Tourists are the main economy for this old sea town. The local populations is only in the upper thousands but it will triple in the summer time when people from Germany, Russia and surrounding Italy come and relax along the Italian Rivera. It has some of the most beautiful, clean beaches and luxurious places to stay.
There is some pieces of history that come with this town. It is the birthplace if the Queen of Belgians, Paola Ruffo di Calabria. It of course has its Roman Empire marks left with the large fortress that rises out of the middle of the main square. It was originally built by the then, Grand Duke Peter Leopold, who in, 1788 became the Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold II. He built this fortress to defend the coast from any attackers. In later centuries, the fortress became a place to store the Carrara marble that was brought down from the Alpi Apuane. From the fortress the marble would be packed aboard a ship and sent out to the world.
The Fortress is a main attraction when visiting the city, however, there are other things to do. The Apuan Alps have become quite the hit for adventurers. There is a road that goes up the mountainside for a nice drive. There is plenty of hiking and climbing to be done along the top of the mountains. Visit some of the marble quarries. Then there is the water below. One can always spend the day reading a favorite novel and napping in the sand. Nothing is more tranquil than the waves rushing in and the breeze cooling the water on the skin. Some great boat adventures will take you to some near by islands for some scuba diving or snorkeling.
