Many Museums of Kiel

After you’ve checked into one of the fine Kiel hotels, the largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, you’ll want to take a walk around this maritime town known for the largest sailing event in the world, the Kiel Regatta.  But the Regatta is only a part of Kiel’s charm.  You’ll find here the St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche), as well as many museums, such as the Maritime Museum and the Zoological Museum.

The St. Nicholas Church is the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 13th Century.  It’s name, St. Nicholas, refers to the same legendary figure who would eventually evolve into Santa Claus for much of the western world.  In front of the church you’ll find a sculpture of Ernst Barlach, who was a sculpture during the 30s and who protested the Nazis with his art work, most of which was confiscated at the time as degenerate art.

The Maritime Museum is home to a number of objects: model ships, naval paintings, nautical instruments.  There’s a “Kaiserpanorama” here, which shows a 3-D stereoscopic picture, holding the largest painting of Kiel’s harbor.  It also has the “Brandtaucher” which was the world’s first operating sub and built in Kiel.  You’ll also find a number of vintage ships moored at the neighboring Harbour Museum, with a Kiel fire-fighting ship, a Hindenburg lifeboat, and the Bussard, with a 1905 steam engine and boiler room, among them.

The Zoological Museum belongs to Kiel University, bearing twelve exhibition sites.  On display, you’ll find over two hundred thousand animal species, from mayflies to the skeleton of a blue whale.  There’s also a bird exhibit, and here you’ll find nine thousand species, with tropical woodpeckers and a New Guinea bird of paradise.  You’ll also find seven thousand mussel and snail shells taken from all parts of the Earth.  There’s butterflies, too, and moths and flies, bugs, beetles, bees, wasps, and ants.

All of these museums and more are just a part of what you’ll find waiting outside your hotel in Kiel.
