Ever Changing Florence

I love just how Florence, Italy is in a state of constant change. For instance, one day the piazza can be empty and then the next day a mercato has taken up the entire piazza. I recently visited  Piazza di Santa Croce a few days ago and it was empty, but as I walked down via dei Bentaccordi and peered down at the Borgo dei Greci just yesterday, I saw the Mercato di Natale had arrived. In the United States, I know Christmas is right around the corner when all the sales are happening the day after Thanksgiving, but here in Florence, it’s the mercato!

Today, after having coffee at one of the hotel Florence is known for, I walked over to Piazza Santa Croce to take a bit of a look see at the mercato. I love perusing the stalls, some selling Christmas trinkets, some French food or German food, clothes, scarves, shoes and so much more, but the mercato proved to be too busy for me, too packed with locals and tourist alike. So, I ended walking past the mercato and that’s when I saw hundreds of people mulling about the bancarelle. So, I headed up the church steps and looked out over the mercato. I enjoyed the view better up here, but the sky was becoming grey and it was beginning to cool down. I left quickly.

I’m looking forward to perusing the bancarelle at the Mercato di Natale, I’m hoping to check it out a few times this week and hoping it will have less people shopping. I love to see how the mercato changes this beautiful city, especially all the lights the city strings up between many of the streets in downtown. After being here in Florence for almost a year, I have come to really appreciate the city even more as I walk down a familiar street and find it has transformed.
