Govinda Azad, Painting Clouds in Nepal

Nepal is a legendary place, one that has attracted travelers for generations.  It has also attracted residents for generations, having been inhabited for at least 9,000 years.  There have been a number of civilizations that have passed through here, and it has some very famous residents.  Among them, you might already know, is Siddhartha.  There are many people who come here every year on spiritual pilgrimages, wanting to touch the origins of Buddhism.  There are many citizens who are practicing Buddhists today, although Hinduism is the majority religion.  The spiritual history is sometimes eclipsed by the recent political history, which has been fascinating to watch, and means that these are very interesting times.

Nepal has a lot to offer travelers interested in knowing more about the world at large, and there are many spectacular things to see and do here.  If the urban adventures get to be too much, you can always have a go at climbing the world’s highest mountain.  For most guests, however, there is a spectacular urban scene here, and many things to keep your days and nights full, and Nepal hotels can keep you in splendid lodgings.  While you’re out on the town, if you get a chance to visit the Siddhartha Art Gallery, you’ll see some of the fantastic work that local artists are doing these days.

It opened in 1997, and has been instrumental in mounting a number of astonishing works by artists in the region, as well as hosting a vast array of public events, and does its work with a deep social conscience.  One of the artists here who will very likely catch your eye and heart is Govinda Azad.  He was born in Nepal, and ran away to India when he was old enough to study science at school.  A deeply committed artist, he has had a number of shows all over the world.  His abstract works are intimations of a divine pulse that runs through all things.  Influenced by Hindu philosophy, and devoted to using his work to promote the cause of peace in the world, some of his most profound work is clouds, capturing their movements in time and space to reveal spiritual truths.  It’s a spectacular way to get introduced to art in modern Nepal.
