Making Friends in Dubai

I woke up around 5:30pm and man was I tired, but my power nap felt good. I gave Steve a call and I think I woke him up from his nap too. We decided to grab dinner and I told him I’d meet him in one of the Dubai UAE luxury hotels and have dinner there. It took me a little longer to get ready, because I needed a shower and change clothes, but I made it to the lobby in time. Steve decided to take a few members of his team out to dinner too, I didn’t mind, I’ve met them earlier and they were a ton of fun.

We hung out at the hotel bar and had few cocktails while we waited for a few more guys to show up. The bar was filled with Europeans, Americans, Arab and Asians, which was great, I was so tired of being in the company of my own white self. The bar was more of a British pub, which was great also, made me fill like home and more at ease. The others finally arrived and I was introduced to Robbie and Michel (his wife). Robbie drove us and I was really excited to have dinner at one of the better restaurants in Dubai. The restaurant was really fancy and really expensive, Steve told me not to worry, since he was treating me. We finally got to eat around 10pm! We didn’t make reservations, so we headed to the bar until a table was ready for a party six. All our dishes were really well done, but the best thing was the aquarium in the center. It has all kinds of fish and it even had a shark!

Robbie was crashing after his meal, so he drove us all back to our respective hotels, which was very nice of him and his wife. Steve told me he would like to see me tomorrow too, if that would be okay with me, and I said yes! I went to bed knowing I wouldn’t get too much sleep tonight, because of all the thinking of Steve.

Making Our House a Home

Last year, after just two years of marriage, my husband and I decided to buy our first house.  Little did we realize that if we had just waited another year, we could have saved ourselves several thousand dollars – oh well.  We love our house and, being a woman, I have so enjoyed planning and decorating each and every room; from the bedroom to bathroom and the library to our future children’s rooms. Because our house is about 20 years, one of the first things we realized we needed to replace were the windows.  The original windows were the old single-pane glass, and as a result we could hear every car that drove past our house.  So we saved up some money and had nice dual-pane, energy saver windows installed.  I have to say, they have been worth every penny.
It was then that I realized that with these beautiful, new windows we would need some new blinds.  After doing some research on the Better Business Bureau, I found Next Day Blinds.  I spent several hours browsing their website (they have an excellent selection) before I decided to give them a call.  They sent someone out, at a convenient time for me, to measure each of our windows and give me a more accurate quote.  They then took the order to custom make the blinds specifically for my windows.  The next day when my blinds were ready they came and installed them in no time at all.  I tend to be very picky about the quality of products and services but the Next Day Blinds customer service department will not be hearing from me.  Not only do my new blinds look great but each of the workers was considerate and professional.  Based on my experience I don’t know how anyone would have Next Day Blinds issues.
Even though I know it will take a while to make our house look just right, I feel confident that we are moving ever closer to making our house not just a home, but the home of our dreams.

Overburning in Dubai

Dubai is a stunning place to visit, and every trip reveals more and more reasons why it’s such a popular destination these days.  Night life is at a premium here, where it’s possible to watch international celebrities having a night on the town, hoping to stumble into the party of the year.  It’s always possible to come across the party of the year here, too, and every evening seems to come close.  There are excellent djs, and some of the hottest in the world, showcasing their talents on the turntable in order to impress an immensely discerning audience.  The crowd comes dressed to kill, too, and on any given night you can see some of the coolest fashion trends, while also showing off your own sharp sensibilities.  One of the best ways to take in the scene here is from a 5 star Dubai hotel.

Our hotels are the top of the line, and are carefully selected for their magnificent track records in both style and hospitality.  You’ll love the blend of absolutely modern convenience and technology with old fashioned graciousness, to add welcome touches of elegance to your experience here, day and night.  You’ll need to rest in total luxury, too, when you’re enjoying a city as much as this one.  The cultural scene is stunning during the day, but the night is when things really start to shake, and the various sides of Dubai come out to play.  It’s an awful lot of fun, and at times it feels like you’re participating in the invention of a new global culture.  Even more so if you’re listening to the stylings of DJ Alberto Bambini, aka Purepath.

He hails form Lucca, Italy, which is still his home base.  His newest project, Overburning is an album that combines all of his technical ability with his excellent songwriting skills.  It’s a welcome new direction for this artist, whose 15 years of experience have influenced the way people dance these days.  Whether you’re listening to him spinning his stunning mixes, or start hearing tracks of his new musical work, he’s a welcome Italian accent to the Dubai dance floors.

Han Sai Por Sculpts Singapore

Singapore is a land of contradictions, and its mysteries can’t be unlocked in one day, or even one year.  Its elusiveness is certainly part of its charm, and it’s easy to get lost in the fantastic possibilities for enjoyment here.  With gorgeous bay views, and a stunning skyline, the combination of natural and urban sceneries here offer endless opportunities to daydream.  It’s one of the best places in the world for people-watching, where individual style and flair are always displayed, at all times of the day, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the fashion capitals of the world.  Because of the extraordinarily unique nature of Singapore, boutique hotel accommodations are a splendid choice to compliment this city-state.

Our boutique hotels offer plenty of choices to please any taste, and are selected for their excellence in service and style, so your own style is gracefully reflected with enormous hospitality.  Hospitality is an art form in this old sea port, so that you can enjoy your down time just as much as your time out exploring.  When you are exploring this fantastic place, be sure to check out Fort Canning Park.  It’s a favorite among locals, as well as visitors, and has a fascinating 700 year history.  It’s in the center of the busiest shopping area, so there are always people around, checking out the experimental botanical gardens or the hosts of other attractions here.  There are also excellent sculpture installations here, and you can often see the work of one of Singapore’s master sculptors, Han Sai Por.

Her Seed series was on display here until 2002, and it was a big hit among the park visitors.  It was a splendid example of her work, which is often in stone or granite.  Her aesthetic is to find the hidden life in the stone, and to bring part of it to light, and keep part of it hidden, so that the seed becomes a metaphor for how the artist sees the world.  She has shown her work all over the world, and is featured in many public art displays.  Han Sai Por (http://www.hansaipor.com/bio.html) won the Outstanding City Sculpture Award in China in 2006.  She has also won Singapore’s Cultural Medallion Award a couple of times, and in 2008 received the award to create public art based on the local flora.

Zoulikha Bouabdellah at Art Dubai

Dubai is one of the hottest destinations these days, and has been a magnet to some of the world’s most well-traveled celebrities, looking for the next big beach party. It also attracts hosts of artists and young musicians, looking to enjoy the city’s popularity as one of the new creative centers in the world. It is many things to many people, and has something to offer everyone. Children can find a brilliant array of activities here, and even the shopping malls are way over the top in terms of visual style and entertainment. It’s possible to make your children happy while also catching up on the latest fashion trends, all in one location. For the visitors who are looking for a perfect 4-star hotel, Dubai can offer splendid accommodations.

Even the hotels are a fantastic blend of the old and the new, mixing tradition and innovation to give you an exceptional experience in hospitality. You’ll be enchanted by the amenities we offer, and after a short rest, you’ll experience a restoration of energy that’s a perfect beginning for your Dubai adventure. If you find yourself wondering why there are so many new galleries here, you’re not alone. It’s been a fantastic couple of years for the art scene in Dubai, and as a result, the world at large. Art Dubai is an extremely well-attended event, and has the support of the whole city. The international art world watches as local and international artists come here to display new works and talk about the nuts and bolts of art theory, cultural theory, and the state of things in general. Some of the most innovative minds in the art world show here, and you might see Zoulikha Bouabdellah speaking or showing her latest works.

Bouabdellah was born in Moscow in 1977, but moved to Algeria and later to Paris, where she now resides. She has also lived and studied in Cape Town, and her cultural influences are vast. In 2008, she was a winner of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, and exhibits at Art Dubai. Her work is intellectually very stimulating, and re-creates iconic images of gender, religion, and cultural identity. Her other obsession is media, and this runs through all of her work, informing its feminist sensibility with fascinating resonances that come from her own background as an Algerian by blood, living at variance with her social world. Her work is a splendid contribution to the artistic dialogues happening in Dubai today.

Don’t Miss Lower Manhattan

When in New york City I recommend staying at a four star New York hotels in lower Manhattan. The ethnic neighborhoods and the artists, Soho, the Village and so much more.

Lower Manhattan is crammed with history. The narrow streets run in every direction, these were laid out in the days of horses and buggies and before the concept of city planning was invented. Moving northward on the island one sees the streets laid out in a grid pattern showing the efforts of surveyors and city planners.

Lower Manhattan is home to Battery Park. At the tip of the island here is where you catch the ferry to Staten island and to Liberty Island to visit the Statue of Liberty. looking out from Battery Park you see New York Harbor, on any given day you will see countless ships and boats coming and going from the Harbor. Here in New York Harbor ships can begin to make there way up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and into the Great Lakes. Battery Park can offer a nice relaxing place to escape from the city momentarily.

The East Village, Soho and Greenwich Village are filled with charming architecture dating back through several centuries serving as examples to various styles and tastes that have come and gone from favor. These areas are filled with wonderful neighborhood eateries, cafes, and resturaunts as well as shopping and art galleries.

Lower Manhattan is known for a variety of experiences and styles. Arts and ethnicity abound here with little Italy, China Town, Russian, Ukrainian and other ethnic areas to explore. Although the world famous 5th Avenue shopping and Broadway theaters are uptown and further uptown are the massive museums and Central Park the experience of visiting lower Manhattan should not be underestimated. In lower Manhattan you can get a good feel for what life in the city is like.
