The building is constructed in the Andalusian school of mannerism from the 17th century, and was first operating as the Merced Calzada Convent. It was converted to the museum in the 19th century as a government-sponsored art institution. Its collection today is fascinating, covering work from the Gothic period until the 20th century. Most of the work at Bellas Artes is fairly representational, and there are fantastic works by classical and contemporary masters.
