Bangalore is a place of many wonders, both classical and contemporary.  There are old part of the city which are very interesting, with ancient temples and places of great historical interest, and there are also places which are very modern.  Bangalore has a reputation for being one of the technological centers of the world, and this is certainly true, but there are many other Bangalores.  There is a fascinating creative culture here, one that has developed over centuries, of course, but in the last few decades has produced some very interesting works of art.  One project that comes through Bangalore, to highlight the work of artists here and help needy children with disabilities, is the Art for Prabhat project.
In this project, children with mental retardation make canvasses for artists in the cities they’re visiting.  The artists make new works on the paper, which is acid-free, and handmade by the children from recycled waste.  These works are then displayed and sold, and the proceeds go to the children.  The Art for Prabhat is beautifully-conceived, and should catch on so that the contributions of some of the invisible young people here can be recognized, giving them a place in the world.  The work of famous artists, such as Bangalore’s own Kaylan Rathore adds another dimension altogether to the project, making a combination of handmade creativity that has many beautiful hands behind it.
