A wonderful time in Johannesburg
I was told to be very cautious in Johannesburg. That I should not stray too far from the hotels Johannesburg offers to tourist, because they are a safe haven. But, all those warnings didn’t keep me from giving the place a visit. My curiosity is peaked more than usual because of those warnings. Plus, I never believe what someone tells me, especially the media, until I can verify it for myself. Plus, I know there’s some great countryside to see outside of Johannesburg and I really needed a holiday.
I found that South Africa has come a very long way, but, yes, it still has a long way to go. But, the infrastructure, like the buildings, roads and public transportation is what I considered the best in the world. Which is a weird juxtaposition with the shanty towns strewn through out this modernity. I’m not sure as to why shanty towns still exist with such an up-to-date city like Johannesburg. What I found even more interesting, is when I went into Soweto, the place everyone warns you to stay away from, I was welcomed with open arms. Soweto is a black township just a couple of miles away from Johannesburg.
Well, what can I say? I was not scared or had a reason to be scared. I did wander off from my hotel room and I’m so glad I did; otherwise, I would’ve never got to experience all of what Johannesburg has to offer a traveller, a visitor and now a friend. So, please let my little story help you figure out for yourself that what people warn you about, just might be their own fears about the world in general, but do make their fears yours. About the only thing I found frightening in South Africa was being in the wilderness, I mean, there are still animals that would like to eat me for lunch.
