Bicycling Johannesburg

In General cycling opportunities in Johannesburg South Africa is improving. The country has paved roads so there is an infinite number of routes to map out for a day long trek or just a short jaunt. Several Bicycling Club now book Luxury Hotels Johannesburg for their annual cross-country cycling events. These events are well coordinated in advance; roads are prepared for the spectators cyclist. As for the every day bicyclist such as myself there are a few notes of caution when on the road.

First, the heavy traffic in many of the urban areas is seriously something to be constantly vigilant. Second, bicycles are not welcome on all the major Highways and Interstates. Bicycling there is illegal. Third, there are some lingering ethnic tension, so know where you are cycling and be up to date about the issues concerning the area you will be riding through. Forth, there is crime and violence in and around the down town business areas and in some of the urban areas, crime is on the rise. I recommend, if you are staying at a hotel, ask the concierge for the best and safest places to ride.

There are hundreds of routes for cyclists. Travelling on the secondary roads is advised because the National Routes are not bicycle friendly. A possible short route is in Cape Town going through Beaufort West, then Karoo to Bloemfontein, on to Johannesburg and lastly Pietersburg. A more interesting route is along the coast. Bicycling through Cape Town to Garden Route which will take you through Knysa then on to Port Elizabeth and East London will bring you to the Wild Coast. This is where a bicyclist needs to be cautious due to a high crime rate, but the spectacular scenery is well worth taking the chance. The subtropical Hibuscus coast of Southern Kwazulu (Natal), to Durban will take your breath away. Then cycle inland through the beautiful Kwazulu you will reach Johannesburg. The roads are excellent, the people are fantastically friendly and its an inexpensive way to see South Africa.
