When Athletes Become Celebrities

Many movie and rock stars create their crafts with the main goal being to gain celebrity status, and live that celebrity lifestyle.  With such an emphasis on commercialization today and companies trying to use anybody and everybody who has the slightest bit of fame to hawk their product to customers, it was only a matter of time before it drifted into the realm of professional sports.  It used to be that athlete’s became pro to be the best at their respective sports and get paid vast sums of money.  Now, that is not enough there are many athlete’s who are trying to turn their image into a more Star Celebrity Status.  This is evident with athlete’s trying to get into movie roles, putting out rap CD’s, dating movie stars, starting fashion lines, etc.  Big corporations back these athletes using them to sell their products to target audiences.  It has become too much though, with athlete’s having restrictions on what brand of cards they can sign, or what products they can use, even when they aren’t on TV.  Shaq O’Neal has tried movies and rap, even Kobe Bryant has put out a rap CD.  Tony Romo is in the tabs for his high profile fling with Jessica Simpson, and even tennis players like Venus and Serena Williams, who are currently competing in the Australian Open, are starting fashion lines.  Their already sky high salaries aren’t enough; these athletes think just because they are great at their respective sports they can excel at anything else that carries celebrity status.  Enough is enough.
